Restore the
Mead Name

In 1916, Governor John A. Mead built Middlebury its chapel. In 2021, the College erased the Mead family name. We are asking them to honor the contract and promises made - and restore the name carved in wood.

Why this matters

This is about more than a name. It is about keeping a promise, due process, and intellectual honesty.

i.

Fidelity to Promises

A century-old chapel built in good faith - and the trust that institutions will honor their agreements.

ii.

Due Process

A name removed without the process, dialogue, or fairness such a decision demands.

iii.

Intellectual Diversity

Judging history with nuance instead of erasure - preserving the full, complicated record.

The Story

A Chapel Built to Honor God and Vermont Heritage

Mead Memorial Chapel has crowned Middlebury's hilltop since 1916 - a Collegiate Gothic landmark built by Governor John Abner Mead to honor his ancestors and his belief in education, community, and faith.

“More than a building - it was a tribute to faith, family, and lasting values.”

For over a century the chapel carried the Mead name. In the fall of 2021, Middlebury College removed it. Former Gov. Jim Douglas and the Mead estate are now fighting to restore it - a case that has reached the Vermont Supreme Court.
