A Chapel Built to Honor God and Vermont Heritage
Mead Memorial Chapel has crowned Middlebury's hilltop since 1916 - a Collegiate Gothic landmark built by Governor John Abner Mead to honor his ancestors and his belief in education, community, and faith.
“More than a building - it was a tribute to faith, family, and lasting values.”
For over a century the chapel carried the Mead name. In the fall of 2021, Middlebury College removed it. Former Gov. Jim Douglas and the Mead estate are now fighting to restore it - a case that has reached the Vermont Supreme Court.
